On Sunday, October 17th, we made the short drive from Gettysburg, Pa to Washington, DC. Greenbelt National Park is a beautiful wooded park with camping, picnicing, and hiking trails only 10 miles from the center of Washington and 12 miles from Baltimore. Not only that, it is only a mile or so from a Metro station with plenty of parking. Like New York City, Washington has enough sights, sites, and activities to fill as much time as one is willing to give. In our five days, we visited museums -- American History, Natural History, Corcoran, Renwick, National Gallery and two new ones: the stunning Museum of the American Indian and the Udvar-Hazy Air & Space Museum near Dulles! We visited memorials -- Arlington Cemetery, the World War II Memorial, Franklin Roosevelt Memorial, etc. We had dinner and a nice visit with Noel's niece Clare, husband Steve, and their children Eve and Andrew. And Jackie met a kindergarten chum, Judy, for lunch. Toured the Capitrol building, had crab cakes at the Capitol City Brewing Company, saw a Cirque de Soleil IMAX film, and more. And, took one photo with a recognizable background, to prove we were there!
On Saturday, October 24, we left Greenbelt for Fredricksburg for a brief visit with Jackie's Aunt Gerry, along with cousin Barbara and her husband Wayne. Aunt Gerry has her own apartment in an assisted living facility, where her daughter Barbara, son-in-law Wayne, and the grand-children can visit and see to her needs.
From Fredericksburg, we headed west into the Blue Ridge Mountains, to camp with the WINs at Sherando Lake National Recreation Area, a welcome respite from all the urban experiences of the previous week. Arlein Steiner hosted this gathering, and planned a varied mix of hikes, kayaking, sightseeing, etc. While at Sherando, I took Jackie to Richmond Airport, so she could fly to California for another "grand-baby fix". While she enjoyed Alex and Melissa's twins and Catherine and Rob's three little ones, I enjoyed the Blue Ridge and the Shenandoah areas.
