On Oct 9, it was time to leave Paramus. We travelled independently of the other WINs, so we could meet the moderator of the Lazy Daze RV group on Yahoo!, a talented fellow named Andy Baird. It was fun to put a face with the name, and to see all of the clever improvements he has made to his older rig. We still got to Philadelphia before dark, where the WINs had gathered in a shopping center parking lot, chosen for its proximity to central Philadelphia.
<< On Sunday, we carpooled into Independence Mall and spent the day absorbing the events and sites of our nation’s birth and, of course, seeing the Liberty Bell. We had a great tour guide who brought life to our visit to Independence Hall, learned a lot about Jefferson and Franklin, and had our first genuine Philly Cheese Steak sandwich.
With signs like this one, we could still be there >>
Monday continued the Revolutionary War theme, with a visit to Valley Forge. It was a bright but cool, windy day with beautiful fall colors and we took the time to walk the five-mile tour route rather than drive it.
From Valley Forge we continued on to Ephrata, Pa in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country. Over several days we learned about the Amish and Mennonites, ate heartily, took an excursion ride behind a steam locomotive through scenic Amish farms, and more. Here we show a typical Amish farm on laundry day, and some typical hungry WINs eating family style in Bird In Hand, Pa.
From Ephrata, where we were on the beautiful wooded grounds of an Elks Lodge, it is a short hop to Gettysburg, where the local Moose Lodge has there own campground. Gettysburg is fascinating, with enough to keep a Civil War buff busy for years. But it didn't take long for us to feel a little depressed over the massive carnage. Our spirits were lightened somewhat by the dedicated, but good-humored, volunteer re-enactors who fired their weapons for us.
